When Do Vegetarians (or Vegan) Diets Make Sense For Dogs?

Last updated on

Some people strictly avoid meat and want to feed their dogs the same diet.

Is this idea irresponsible? Potentially harmful?

Switch a pet pooch to vegan or vegetarian Foods increase some Red flags.

Here is the truth:

Your dog can survive without eating meat.

But letting a furry friend decide would be very instructive. They likely eat carnivorous foods.

The fact is Your dog prefers meat.

Forcing vegetarianism is a questionable thing. There should be a good justification for it.

Nor does that mean that this type of diet is impossible for an animal.

In rare circumstances, dogs can be fed a vegetarian (or even vegan) diet.

There is only one valid reason why avoiding meat would make sense for a dog:

IF eating chicken or beef proves unhealthy.

A veterinarian would have to confirm such a medical condition. For example, struvite crystals can develop in their urine if the dog does not process meat proteins normally.

Otherwise a vegetarian diet does not make sense.

Factors for furry friends

Keep in mind that your dog may have Allergies to foods like soy, wheat and corn. Many types of nuts are also unsuitable.

Sure, some fruit and vegetables are excellent.

But the thing is:

Veganism or vegetarianism is a whole different story.

Grains and vegetables take time to be absorbed. Your dog cannot extract these nutrients as well as a human can.

Why is this?

A dog's digestive process is relatively quick. It is the length of the bowel.

These are just two reasons why feeding a meatless diet high in complex carbohydrates is controversial.

Omnivore or Carnivore?

There is an endless debate over whether dogs are omnivores or carnivores.

The answer doesn't have to be complicated.

It's easy!

Your dog is carnivorous compared to a human and omnivorous compared to a cat.

In any case, it is natural and (more importantly) very beneficial for dogs to eat fresh meat (and Animal bones also)!

Beliefs versus Wellbeing

Do not feed your dog a vegetarian diet based on personal preference or belief.

Make logical decisions, not emotional ones.

This is an important decision for your dog!

There are much better alternatives out there if you're looking for something superior to commercial dog food. Look into the Raw food option!

It is possible, but difficult

It is also not easy to force a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle on your dog.

Do you know how to find the right balance between omega-3 and omega-6 fats? Too many grains mean the carbohydrates are inordinately high.

Would your dog get enough amino acids, calcium, and protein without meat?

Food is fuel. Your pet has very specific needs.

The bottom line

Dogs live on fresh meat.

There are situations when a dog may require a vegan or vegetarian diet. This would be an exception, not the rule.

Your dog probably shouldn't be fed this unconventional way.

Meat is almost always a must. Ethics don't matter.
