Can Dogs Drink Skim Milk?

Are you thinking of giving your dog something? Skimmed milk? It's an idea that should be carefully considered.

The important things first:

Despite the reduced cream and fat, skimmed milk is still a dairy product. Yup! Proteins and sugars are still present even after the removal process.

So here is the deal:

Feeding your dog's skimmed milk can cause indigestion (and that would be normal) due to a certain level of lactose intolerance.

Gently give your dog skimmed milk

Fortunately, sharing in small amounts is usually uneventful.

Of course, skimmed milk has its advantages. There's plenty of riboflavin, vitamins B12 & D, phosphorus, and calcium, among others. The thing is, these essential nutrients should be better introduced.

Sure, some dogs are not that sensitive to lactose. Even so, many others suffer from gas and / or vomiting.

Still on the fence?

This can convince you: once your buddy is weaned from breast milk (or a substitute) there is usually no reason to go back.

When giving your dog skimmed milk, watch out for the runs (diarrhea), which is a clear sign that he is not handling it as well.

Skeptical skepticism

Each skim milk calorie contains more protein than the normal material.

This is true!

It's a lot less fat (because the cream has been removed). With that in mind, it's more suitable for a pet pooch.

In fact, there is a good argument that skimmed milk is better than Whole milk.

But the following is also true:

Your dog can get a lot of protein (and the same nutrients) from solid food sources. Why not keep things simple and avoid dairy products altogether?

Also…

liquids In general, it's not how valuable calories should be added to a healthy dog's diet (unless there is a medical reason).

1 or 2 percent milk

When a dog's skimmed milk does something, its fat intake is comparatively less. This is just as true as 1% milk is less fat than 2% milk.

But less cream doesn't mean it's a good idea for a dog.

Everything is the same: skimmed milk is still questionable.

On the other hand, if your dog tolerates the diary well, a bit of skim milk won't do any harm. It will keep the calorie count and fat intake low.

Skim or no lactose?

Lactose-free milk is another option.

In comparison, skimmed milk (although it may be better than whole milk) is likely a little more problematic than the lactose-free variety.

The reason?

Lactose intolerance is very relevant for canines.

Our opinion on milk in general:

Skimmed milk, lactaid or normal cow's milk are only useful for dogs in individual cases. Definitely get your veterinarian's point of view.

For now, it cannot be stressed enough:

Consider your dog's particular digestive sensitivity before making a feeding decision.

The bottom line

Feeding skimmed milk to your dog is not a good idea.

Low fat is better than regular milk, but it still doesn't make sense to feed it. Reintroducing dairy products is rarely beneficial.

At the same time, a modest amount of skimmed milk is unlikely to be a problem.
