Do Cats Get Jealous? And What To Do About It?

Anyone who lives with a cat will have observed behavior that looks very much like jealousy. You may have petted one of your cats when another one came along and tried to join in, only to be knocked off by the cat who originally enjoyed the cuddle! You may even have noticed that the hangover looks very upset if you pay attention to your friend when he comes to your home for coffee. But do cats get jealous of each other or other people?

Do our cats feel jealous?

Experts disagree on whether cats actually feel envious. Some believe that when cats are assertive or pushy, they are simply acting according to a social hierarchy. If they feel that their social status is above another cat, or even above a human, they will show it. Others interpret this feline behavior as a desire to grab their owner's attention rather than a feeling of envy towards another animal or person.

Jealous behavior can also have its roots in a cat's desire to defend what it perceives to be itself and in its territorial nature. In the wild, cats would have fought for resources like shelter, food and water. Male cats also fought for female cats' attention, and females defended their territory by raising their kittens. Other cats weren't welcome to share and while this isn't strictly jealousy it boils down to the same thing.

What does cat jealousy look like?

There are several signs that your cat is jealous. Regardless of whether you think that emotion is actually jealousy or not, the following are signs that your cat is unhappy and it means you need to do something about it.

  • Show signs of aggression

Aggression is a tell-tale sign of the cat's jealousy and obsession. It may show up as biting, nibbling, and scratching. The aggression is directed at the animal or human receiving the attention it believes it has. This can be a problem if you have an older cat and are introducing a young kitten into your home.

It can also manifest itself as what animal behaviorists refer to as "intrusive behavior," which means that they are trying to prevent another cat from moving around the house as desired, or that they are imposing themselves on you if you are trying to to give some love to another pet.

In a multiple pet household, you may find your cat growls and hisses at another pet, or gets into a physical battle with them.

Cats often show that they are unhappy with inappropriate toilet habits. Instead of using their litter box like they used to, you may find them peeing or pooping in the middle of the carpet. When cats get jealous, minor accidents can also occur with your personal items, such as linen or bedding. This is a sure sign that your kitten is a little jealous of something! If you have a new pet in the home it could be a protest that they are being forced to share their people and territory.

  • Interaction with other pets and people

A jealous cat can begin to pay a lot of attention to its human owner. They can start sitting on your lap, snuggling up to you when you're trying to work, or even licking your face or hand. They can pick up a favorite toy and bring it to you to get you to play with them. They can even try a trick that they know will always make you laugh. This can be a nuisance as cats are very good at invading your personal space. They lie on a laptop keyboard, sit on your important papers, and poke a fragile object off your desk for you to stroke.

A rarer sign of jealousy is that your cat is withdrawing and spending more time alone. You can leave the house or choose to spend time in another room.

What Makes Cats Jealous?

Most animal experts agree that this type of behavior is shown by cats who are bored or want extra attention from their owners. Cats can feel very insecure and need approval from their human family. They like to be petted and cuddled, and they like it when people around the house play with them. You do not have to ...
