Ed and Reub: The Corvair

Mary's River meanders through the south end of town, and most of the time it's a calm creek that offers banks to the homeless in Avery Park and creates a swimming hole or two for the locals.

Yesterday, John and I went to the urban "natural area," a floodplain that they flanked in the southwestern part of town. It's a lonely and beautiful thing.

A junk car was parked on its bank, filled with silt from repeated flooding.

When we lived in the deep south, we visited Providence Park in western Georgia, where we laughed at a sign on a nature trail that proclaimed a destroyed car an "ecosystem". However, it stayed with both of us. So when we see a junk car in the middle of nowhere, we're admitting that it could be an ecosystem for various weeds and rodents. It can be so and we no longer laugh.

Identified by friends on Facebook, the car appears to be an old Corvair or Renault, ruined and covered with bullet holes. What was her story?

Where did it go How did it end up here? I dont know. But slowly and surely it is being adopted by the world around it. No oil leaks and the rear engine was looted a long time ago. It's now home to weeds and small animals, Mary's River silt and not much more.

You gotta love it
